Biography

"Solid on my foundation, I began to form without fear my way of creating, good or bad, I don't know, but true, sincere, a real reflection of what I see with my eyes and feel with my heart... the exact manifestation of what I believe should be art! How many years have I taken to delimit this art? Twenty years!"

These words are not mine, but a quote by Sorolla, from the book " Sorolla, The Masterworks" by Blanca Pons- Sorolla. But his words mesh so perfectly with my own feelings that I humbly borrow from the master.

As I approach my 22nd anniversary painting full time, I have labored to learn every aspect of realism, working across all genres to produce an on- going autobiography in paint. Switching genres is to me like cross training in the gym, except it's a brain exercise rather than a muscular one. In addition to building a vastly more interesting body of work, it forces the brain to make new connections to keep up with processing demands. Being self-taught and now teaching others, I have thought at great length about the process of learning to make art, how the brain processes images, how the painter creates illusions that emotionally resonate within the viewer's brain. With each painting , I learn more, a never ending building process.

While best known for the painterly naturalism of my landscapes, I equally enjoy painting the people who pass through my life, whether presented as portraits or figurative pieces. I am honored to include among my portrait sitters, William F. Buckley Jr., Dr. George Church, Salvatore Ferragamo, Philanthropist David H. Koch, The Presidents of Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Mrs. Mary Phipps, Dr. David Steinberg, President of Long Island University and Nobel Laureates Drs. Elizabeth Blackburn, Thomas Cech, Carol Greider, and James D. Watson.
